Reef area

Mark Spalding has recently written a paper in which he estimates
global reef area under three different definitions of a reef (using the
World Conservation Monitoring Centre's GIS of reef distribution). I
believe that one of these definitions comes up with the figure of
230,000km2 mentioned in an earlier posting. I also have a feeling
that the paper is now in press with Coral Reefs. Mark is currently in
the field in the Seychelles and so cannot enter this discussion
himself. His email is:

I am sure he would be very happy to respond to interested people on
his return.

Best wishes,

Callum Roberts
