Clorox on reefs?

Hi- I'm wondering if anyone has done any research on the effects of 
Clorox (bleach) on coral reefs.  I have just returned from Panama where I 
was doing field research for my master's thesis, and the locals there 
squirt Clorox into nooks and crannies in the reef to catch octopus.  
This is a relatively new method of catching a previously un-used species, 
but I can imagine it must be disastrous- and I'd like to know more about
