We took another look at our priorities for the near future and have
decided that the Pacific and Northeastern Regional Ecologist positions
are likely not needed to be filled right away; the priority positions to
be filled are listed below, the National Systems Ecologist (posted
before) and the MPA Social Scientist (new). My apologies for the earlier
message but I wanted to make sure folks did not spend a lot of time
building a resume response to the regional positions if we were not
immediately looking to fill these roles. I will send out those openings
once again when we are in a position to fill them immediately.

MPA04-001 National System Ecologist

Position: National System Ecologist--Full-time, immediate opening
Location(s): Santa Cruz, CA USA

I.M. Systems Group, Inc (IMSG) has an immediate need for a National
System Ecologist that will play a critical role in the NOAA Marine
Protective Area Center's ongoing effort to design an effective national
system of MPAs meeting multiple conservation and management goals.  To
this end, the candidate will plan and coordinate the natural science
aspects of the national system development process, including: (i)
assessing the contribution of existing MPAs to national; (ii)
characterizing important marine habitats, communities and resources in
US waters; (iii) evaluating existing and emerging threats to the
viability of those resources; (iv) identifying significant gaps in the
current level of place-based protection in US waters; and (v)
identifying potential new or improved MPAs as part of the national
system and the broader ecosystem management framework in the US.  In
addition, National System Ecologist will contribute substantively to a
variety of other science and analytical activities within the MPA
Center, including implementing the national science strategy; evaluating
and synthesizing emerging MPA science and policy issues; contributing to
national and regional marine science initiatives, and developing budget
initiatives to further the application of sound natural science in MPA
design and adaptive management. 

 

The qualified applicant must possess: (i) an advanced degree in marine
ecology or a related discipline (PhD is strongly preferred); (ii) broad
knowledge of the structure and function of US marine ecosystems, and of
the natural processes and anthropogenic stressors that affect their
health and sustainability; (iii) knowledge of the scientific issues and
approaches underlying successful design, management and evaluation of
MPAs, including siting models, network design, spillover, connectivity,
recovery trajectories, monitoring methods, observing systems, etc. (iv)
five or more years of progressive experience applying conservation
planning approaches to the design of MPA sites, networks and/or systems;
and (v) experience with public policy issues and planning processes
involved in the use of MPAs in the U.S. as a conservation and management
tool.

 

The qualified applicant must also possess the: (i) ability to form and
lead collaborative teams with diverse expertise to achieve common
research objectives; (ii) experience with analyzing spatial data in a
marine conservation context; (iii) ability to successfully manage
multiple projects and to prioritize effectively among competing demands;
(iv) strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to
synthesize complex scientific information for diverse audiences and
need;  (v) ability to work objectively in a complex and contentious
public policy arena, occasionally as the sole federal representative;
and (vi) experience with fundraising for marine science or conservation
projects, including working with governmental grants and contracts.

MPA04-004 MPA Social Scientist

Positions: MPA Social Scientist--Full-time, immediate openings

I.M. Systems Group, Inc (IMSG) has an immediate need for an MPA Social
Scientist to play a critical role in the MPA Center's ongoing efforts to
design an effective national system of MPAs meeting multiple
conservation and management goals.  The candidate will coordinate a
small team of social scientists working with other MPA Center staff and
public and private partners to enhance our understanding of the human
dimension of MPAs and to strengthen the application of social science in
MPA planning, management and evaluation.  Specific responsibilities of
the MPA Social Scientist include: (i) forging partnerships among
research, management and stakeholder organizations in the US and abroad
to implement the national social science research strategy and expand
social science research on MPAs issues; (ii) providing social science
support to the MPA Center's ongoing effort to develop a comprehensive,
effective and science-based national system of MPAs in the U.S.; (iii)
conducting a national assessment of the patterns and potential impacts
of human uses in marine ecosystems; (iv) contributing to the
identification and assessment of emerging social and economic issues in
MPA planning processes around the U.S.; and (v) contributing to the
development of agency strategies and budget initiatives involving social
science research in marine conservation. 

 

The qualified applicant must possess: (i) an advanced degree in any
discipline of social science relevant to marine conservation, except
marine archaeology or maritime history (PhD is strongly preferred); (ii)
broad experience working on the human dimension of marine conservation
and management in the U.S.;  (iii) technical knowledge of the diversity
of social science issues, approaches and needs underlying the
successful design and adaptive management of MPAs, including social and
economic aspects of their siting, implementation, monitoring, and
evaluation; (iv) three or more years of progressive experience planning,
conducting and/or coordinating social science research relevant to MPAs;
(v) experience with collecting and analyzing spatial data; (vi)
familiarity with the legal and policy context for planning and managing
MPAs in the U.S., including federal and state requirements for social
and economic analyses environmental review documents; (vii) ability to
form and lead collaborative teams with diverse expertise to achieve
common research objectives; (viii) ability to successfully manage
multiple projects and to prioritize effectively among competing demands;
(ix) strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to
synthesize complex scientific information for diverse audiences and
need;  and (x) experience with fundraising for marine science or
conservation projects, including working with governmental grants and
contracts.
