Melissa,

A fair bit has been published, but the results are either not definitive, or vary from case to case. Various hypotheses include photoprotection, photoassistance to photosynthesis, influence on color of coral (happens, but not a likely function), or that the fluorescing proteins are there for a perfectly good reason (as yet unknown) in the life of the animal, but that reason having nothing to do with the fluorescence. There is a list of references on fluorescence at a web site that I maintain, http://www.nightsea.com/references.htm . Some of the listings there have links to downloadable pdf's.

Best regards,

Charles Mazel

Hello Listers,

Is there any info out there about what's going on when corals floresce?

Cheers,
