[Coral-List] re: job listings and resumes

Dear list ,
I really want to add a small point to this discussion.
When I finished college (1997) I did look into this list and I have remained a member since. However, it never occurred to me to post my resume or plight deliberately to the list. I did my leg work of finding out who was in the list, who matched my interests, what was their mail (post) address, and wrote letters addressing each person. I had a ton of negative replies, made some contacts, and in less than a month I did find a dream job this way (low paying, but very rewarding) which I had to leave because of pregnancy (life does get in the way of dreams).
To end the point, I think recently graduated scientists also need to become independent of copy/pasting messages into lists in an effort(less) to find a job.
DO make the effort and the leg work. Electronic age is way too facilitating some times.

Sincerely,
Angie Bancalari

For one, it's too much to expect Jim to handle emails from the several hundred thousand people around the world that are looking for jobs and internships in coral reef science or management and who want to advertize their skills on the list. Secondly, the list has a purpose which is clearly described on the NOAA Coral Home Page, and it's not to help people find jobs. I would hate to see Coral-List deteriorate to become so overwhelmed with non-relevant messages to the list's mission. Yes, students need to learn how to write CVs but this is NOT the place to do that. I suggest that more people join ISRS and that a Job Search section be added to the ISRS web page. Many other scientific societies do that. A big problem is that too few people in the coral reef community support ISRS with their membership fees so the society may not have the resources to handle activities such as this proposed one.

> As Coral-List has become better known, people have, in my opinion, increasingly abused the intent of the list to the point where Jim or one of his staff now has to check every message for appropriateness. I suggest that if there are so many folks intrested in job opportunities and CV content that they take the time and effort to organize new lists for folks who want to subscribe to a list that does that. I would hate to drop my subscription to Coral-List because the important content is watered down with so many non-relevant messages. Having the delete key is not enough.
