JIMAR PIFSC CORAL DISEASE SPECIALIST - ID# 25107. School of Ocean and
Earth
Science and Technology, Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric
Research.
Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of
Ocean
and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Joint Institute for Marine and
Atmospheric Research (JIMAR), located at the National Marine Fisheries
Service (NMFS), Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC), in
Honolulu, Hawaii.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon
program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, and
availability
of funds.  Minimum Monthly Salary: $3,291.00. Duties: Works with the
Coral
Reef Ecosystem Division (CRED) multi-disciplinary program to assess,
monitor, restore, and prevent damage to coral reef ecosystems of the
U.S.
Pacific Islands.  Although the incumbent will contribute to each of the
components of this comprehensive program, this position will lead
efforts to
identify and characterize coral disease on shallow-water (< 36 m) coral
reef
ecosystems in the jurisdictional area. Assists in expanding and
improving
existing benthic survey protocols so as to include identification and
prevalence of described coral diseases as well as potentially new,
undescribed diseases, and will conduct underwater diving and snorkel
surveys
to assess and monitor coral disease and other tissue anomalies
throughout
the U.S. Pacific Islands.  Initiates and develops collaborations with
scientists from other agencies and institutions to study microbial and
molecular aspects of coral disease. Integrates research findings into
project's multi-disciplinary context, and will prepare and submit papers
for
publication in reports and referred scientific literature, as well as
make
presentations at scientific meetings. Trains and oversees work of
additional
qualified CRED personnel to conduct field surveys of coral disease and
preliminary analyses. Works with CRED and other agency personnel as
necessary to strategize future research directions and facilitate
funding
efforts. Assists in preparing, maintaining, and troubleshooting research
equipment including scuba diving gear, digital cameras, small boats and
motors, and other scientific equipment needed for field operations. 
Minimum
Qualifications: Education: Master's Degree from an accredited college or
university in Marine Biology, Ecology, Zoology, Biology or related field
involving studies of coral reef ecosystems.  Experience: Three to five
(3-5)
years of marine research work experience which includes data analysis,
report writing, and marine underwater survey techniques of coral reef
ecosystems.  One to three (1-3) years of experience in field surveys of
coral disease. Previous experience at sea for extended periods of time
(2
weeks or more) aboard oceanographic research or fisheries vessels.
Abil/Know/Skills: Strong knowledge of and ability to identify coral
species
of the Central and Western Pacific and quantify abundances using
underwater
survey techniques.  Strong knowledge of described coral diseases and
other
tissue abnormalities which may characterize undescribed coral diseases.
Working knowledge of laboratory methods used to identify coral diseases
and
their etiology.  Working knowledge of statistical procedures to perform
data
analyses, including interpretation of results pertaining to coral
diseases
and ecosystem processes.  Experience with light microscopes and other
laboratory instruments used in the characterization of coral diseases.
Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy and precision. Ability to
use
statistical, analytical, and other presentation (including GIS)
software.
Proficiency with basic office productivity software tools, including
word
processors, spreadsheets, graphics programs, and MS PowerPoint. Must be
SCUBA certified (NAUI, PADI, etc.) to meet the standards established by
the
program's diver certification process (which meets the standards set by
the
American Academy of Underwater Science).  Must possess good free diving
skills. Must be able to complete UH/NOAA diving certification, which
includes meeting the physical, watermanship, academic, and experience
requirements.  Possess a valid driver's license to transport gear to
off-project locations. Demonstrated ability to initiate and develop
collaborations with scientists from other agencies and institutions to
study
microbial and molecular aspects of diseased corals. Must be able to pass
all
training requirements, including but not limited to small boat training,
the
Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW), advanced
first aid, CPR, oxygen assistance, and forklift training. 
Physical/Medical
Requirements: Must be able to obtain NOAA Medical Clearance for NOAA
diving
requirements as well as for embarking/working on NOAA vessels or other
appropriate vessels which includes providing proof of required
immunizations
and/or obtaining the necessary immunizations as required by NOAA Marine
and
Aviation Operations. Ability to work long hours outdoors at various
captive
facilities and remote locations with high exposure to sunlight, aboard
research vessels and aboard small boats (15-20') in coastal and oceanic
waters. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. of SCUBA gear and equipment.
Desirable Qualifications: Doctoral Degree from an accredited college or
university in Marine Biology, Biology, Zoology, Ecology, or related
Marine
Science field. Experience and knowledge of state-of-the-art coral
taxonomy,
field survey techniques, and coral disease syndromes. Experience with
underwater digital videography and photography. Good experience in small
boat handling and maintenance. Ability to design underwater biological
surveys. Experience in training additional qualified personnel to
recognize,
sample, photograph, and maintain records of diseased corals during field
surveys. Working knowledge of ArcView GIS, SAS, MiniTab, MatLab, ACDSee,
Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Paint Shop Pro and other digital
imaging
software. Experience with Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers and
