*/Ecological Risk Characterization for Coral Reefs/*
The 2005 Edwin W. Pauley Foundation course will focus on how to perform
an Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) in a coral reef environment and how
to transform the results of the risk assessment into management and
policy action and ultimately legislative regulation consideration. The
course is designed for resource managers and regulatory scientists from
countries with limited resources who need a management tool to help them
make risk assessment decisions. The course has a two-week format with
one week in October, ’05, and one week in March, ’06. During the first
week, October 2-7, participants will be taught the principles and
methods employed in establishing ecological risk assessment programs.
The program will consist of lectures on:
o The framework and rationale for ERA
o Classical Contaminant Analyses
o Bioindicators of Exposure
o Effects Assessment (Microscale testing)
o Information Resources for Risk Assessment
The lectures will be complemented with laboratory experiences involving:
o Sample Preparation and Contaminant Chemistry Analysis
o Mutatox Measurements (Microtox)
o Whole-Effluent Toxicity Testing
o Assessing On-line Databases via the Internet
Participants will return to their home environments, design a risk
assessment strategy and work plan for an actual resource issue, and then
return to the institute and discuss the ERA strategy and work plan with
the instructors and participant colleagues during the second part of the
course, March 5-10, ’06, in a roundtable format involving fellow
participants and scientists from United Kingdom Environment Agency.
Environment Canada, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Tuition costs for the course, including room and board, have been paid
through the generosity of the Edwin W. Pauley Foundation. In addition,
there are scholarships available for assistance with airfare. Interested
persons should complete an on-line application by July 15^th , 2005, (_

course syllabus(October), instructor resumes, and a suggested reading
list for the course. The enrollment in the course is limited to 16
participants.
The instructors for the course are: Craig Downs, Executive Director,
Haereticus Environmental Laboratory ; John Manock, Professor, Chemistry
Department, UNC-Wilmington; Peter Wells, Senior Coastal Research
Scientist ,Environmental Conservation Branch, Environment Canada; Mike
Depledge, Head of Science, UK Environment Agency (March only).
