POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

 

JOB TITLE:
CONSERVATION PLANNER I

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

Performs conservation and science project work, including Management
Plans and Ecoregional plans organized around critical threats and
ecological management strategies for the Grenadines Parks in Peril
Program. Provides technical support and quality information to
Ecoregional planning teams to best facilitate the design of Ecoregional
portfolios of sites.  Technical support includes compiling, analyzing,
and managing a variety of biotic and abiotic data sets including
bi-national information on the status and distribution of ecological
communities and imperiled plant and animal species.  Responsible for
organizing and facilitating participatory workshops with a variety of
internal and external  stakeholders. Responsible for developing and
updating content for conservation planning Web sites, contributing
materials to monthly newsletter, assisting with conservation modules on
new employee training.   Provides overall administrative and travel
support to the director and staff.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

.         Graduate degree preferred; or Bachelor's degree in biology,
ecology, natural resources management or related field and two years
related work experience or comparable combination of education and
experience.  

.         Ability to organize time and manage diverse activities.  Meet
deadlines.

.         Ability to organize and facilitate participatory workshops 

.         Knowledge of natural systems and the management techniques
used to maintain them.  

.         Demonstrated experience in MS Office, Word, Excel, and Access.
Database management skills with ability to produce reports.  Ability to
use advanced computer functions including navigating the Internet.  

.         Familiarity with GIS, including ability to utilize data to
create appropriate maps.  Experience with statistical analysis and
experimental design.

.         Solid writing, editing, oral communications skills.
Demonstrated excellence in technical writing.

.         Logistical experience planning and organizing meetings,
conferences, and workshops.

 

COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING:

.         Ability to coordinate multiple projects with many variables,
and monitor the progress of work groups toward completing projects
within a specified timeframe.

.         Resolve routine problems independently, consulting with
supervisor to develop plans for resolution of complex or unusual
problems.

.         Ability to compile data from many sources into a completed
plan, resolving differences between disparate sets of data or types of
information, modifying plans and processes as needed.

 

DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:

.         Work independently without requiring detailed management
review of general work.

.         Prioritize work and exercise independent judgment.

 

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT -FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY:

.         May assist with program budget preparation and monitoring. 

.         No direct supervision of staff, but may supervise volunteers
and work-study students.

.         Purchase equipment and supplies as provided for in budget, in
consultation with supervisor.

 

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:

.         Demonstrated ability to write technical reports

.         Formulate ideas and communicate clearly with others, both
orally and in written form.

.         Work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of
people, including scientists, preserve staff, chapter leadership and
others, providing and obtaining needed information.

.         Ability to function productively as a member or leader of a
work team.

.         Communicates technical material to non-scientific audiences.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

.         Capacity to handle complex tasks under pressure and under
stringent time constraints.

.         Ability to work in variable weather conditions, remote
locations and often in physically demanding circumstances.  Valid
driver's license, safe driving record, current insurance and reliable
personal vehicle available for work use.

.         Work requires occasional physical exertion and/or muscular
strain.  Work involves several disagreeable elements and/or exposure to
job hazard's where there is some possibility of injury.

.         Ability to travel approximately 25% of the time
