Post Doctoral Research Associate in Carbonate Sedimentology

Tropical carbonate sediment records of environmental and sea-level change: testing the
microfacies concept

Applications are invited for a Post Doctoral Research Associate to work on a Leverhulme
Trust funded project which will investigate the controls on carbonate microfacies
development within Holocene tropical carbonate environments. In particular, the project
will assess the relationships that exist between contemporary habitat mosaics and
carbonate sediment production across modern carbonate platform systems, and the processes
that operate during the transition from surface to sub-surface carbonate facies. Fieldwork
for the project will be undertaken on the carbonate platform that is developed around
Rodrigues in the western Indian Ocean. The successful applicant will have a PhD in a
relevant area of carbonate geoscience, and will be expected to take a lead role in the
project. This will involve detailed facies mapping, sediment sampling and coring, and
microfacies analysis (and will require snorkelling and/or SCUBA experience). Experience of
working in
contemporary carbonate systems would be advantageous.

The post is available for 30 months (from 1st September 2006) and is being jointly
coordinated by researchers from Manchester Metropolitan University, University of Wales
Bangor, University of Cardiff and BG Group. Starting salary will be around
£23,000/annum.
