2007 Summer Program on Coral Biology in Okinawa, Japan
The 21st Century Center of Excellence (COE) Program, University of
the Ryukyus, provides an international summer program to
approximately ten international students for two months every year in
Okinawa, Japan. The scope of the 2007 summer program (June 23 - Aug
22, 2007 at Sesoko Station, University of the Ryukyus) is population
dynamics, reproduction, development and symbiosis of corals. Students
will learn the above topics through lectures given by internationally
recognized coral researchers and get hand-on experiences through
working with them.
Each student will participate in one of the following projects.
1. Population dynamics and reproductive ecology of corals
(1) Population dynamics of Fungiid corals
(2) Reproduction of Fungiid corals
(3) Community structure and species diversity of corals on the Sesoko
reef moat
2. Reproduction and symbiotic biology of corals
(1) Development and establishment of symbiosis in corals
(2) Cost and benefits of symbiosis for larval dispersal
(3) Establishment of zooxanthellae cultures and their characterization
(4) Related subjects proposed by applicants

Eligibility
A person with academic achievements equivalent to MSc or above
(preferably Ph.D students)
Duration:
June 23, 2007 to August 22, 2007
Place:
Sesoko Station of Tropical Biosphere Research Center, University of
the Ryukyus
Some participants may visit Main Campus (Nishihara campus) to use
SEM, TEM and DNA lab.
Fees, accommodation and transportation:
The 21st Century COE program will provide the followings:
-Round trip airfare from your country to Okinawa (up to 100,000 JPY)
-Accommodation in Okinawa (e.g. Dormitory at Sesoko Station)
-Transportation from and to the airport
