[Coral-List] RE: silt curtain and the trapped water (Wah Sze Lee)

Hi

I worked on a project monitoring corals in north queensland where a silt curtain had been installed to prevent siltation on corals from nearby dredging. After about 3 months (and a couple of strong blows), the silt curtain disintegrated and pieces of it were strewn over an area of approximately 2 acres. It was subsequently replaced with a silt curtain made of more sturdy material.

So the take home message is ... choose your curtains wisely

Cheers

Dear Listers,

Greetings! I would appreciate feed back from listers who have experience in
using or seeing the silt curtain in action in terms of its efficiency in
protecting the reef from siltation/sedimentation.

Also, I managed to browse the web for info on silt curtain, however, there
is no mention of the trapped turbid water before the curtain. Do we just
expect the silt to coagulate and settle? Is it necessary to do something to
the trapped water e.g. filtering off the silt content?

Thank you in advance for your kind reply.

Best regards,
Wah Sze

Hi John,

I'm just back from teaching in the Turks and Caicos
and I noted some small pox disease on a few Palmata
colonies at certain sites. I started noticing them in
October - December, (however, I only arrived in early
September).

Cheers
Jennie
