JOB SUMMARY:
Interior is the guardian of the Nation's most precious natural and cultural
resources and the steward of its trust responsibilities to American Indians

This is a Temporary Appointment Not-to-Exceed (NTE) 1039 hours.

Incumbent implements basic field functions of Buck Island Reef National
Monument Sea Turtle research program and provides assistance in the
collection and processing of field data.

MAJOR DUTIES:

The incumbent implements Buck Island Reef National Monument (NM) Sea Turtle
research program collecting and processing field data on sea turtles
examining the biology and ecology of threatened and endangered animal
population, coastal processes, and mitigation of threats to nesting success.
Coordinates and works with project volunteers conducting night time beach
patrols. Operates motorized vehicles and boats; uses measuring and tagging
equipment on animals, survey instruments, radios, and other electronic
equipment; processes of field data, and maintains equipment and inventory of
supplies.

Area Information:

The position is located within the US Territory of the United States Virgin
Islands (population 52,000) on the island of St. Croix. English is the
primary language; Spanish is secondary. Average daily temperatures are 75-95
degrees, high humidity, St. Croix is situated 1200 miles by water from
Miami, Florida or 2 ½ hour flight from Miami. They are three National Park
Areas on St. Croix: Christiansted National HS, Buck Island Reef NM and Salt
River Bay Historical Park and Ecological Preserve.

Buck Island Reef National Monument is accessed only by boat. It is a 176
acres uninhabited island surrounded by 18,000 marine acres of extensive
coral reef and fisheries resources. It supports a variety of, threatened and
endangered animals and plants while providing visitor use, education and
recreational activities. The Division of Resource Management manages
research and monitoring programs ranging from coral reef ecology, endangered
nesting sea turtles, juvenile sea turtles in their developmental habitat,
migratory birds, exotic species control, and native plant restoration.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

A. Have two years of education above the high school level which included at
least 12 semester hours in any combination of subjects such as biology.
chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics,
agriculture or mathematics.

OR

B. Have six months of general experience performing duties such as filing,
maintaining records and word processing; AND six months of specialized
experience performing duties duch as making field observations of natural
resource conditions; cataloging, labeling and storing plant materials;
entering scientific data; and making simple repairs to technical equipment,
etc.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):

you actually did that would demonstrate your possession of each factor.

1.  Knowledge of biological or physical sciences working with field research
projects including, but not limited to sea turtles, threatened and
endangered species.

2. Ability to collect and analyze data and maintain records according to a
standardized protocol.

3. Skill in oral communications.

4. Skill in written communications.

5. Skill in operating motorized vehicles and boats.

6. Skill in maintaining and/or repairing equipment (boats, outboard engines,
animal tagging and scanning equipment, etc.).


Conditions of Employment:

1.  Possess or be able to obtain a Basic CPR Certification.

2.  Salary will include a 22.5% Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).

3.  Selectee must possess or be able to obtain a valid state driver's
license.

4.  Selectee must complete a security background investigation.

5.  Selectee must be able to swim.

6.  Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid.

7.  Selectee will be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and
shifts.
