*Start Date of Appointment: Summer, 2006*

*Length of Appointment: One year with expectations to continue for at 
least one additional year or more.*

*This is not a federal position**. * *The successful candidate will work 
under a Consolidated Safety Services, Inc. (CSS) contract. The candidate 
will be hired this spring for the NOAA office in Silver Spring.*

A marine ecologist with significant field experience and a background in 
basic statistics is being sought for a position with the National 
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Biogeography Team (BT). 
BT is currently working on a number of collaborative efforts with 
partner agencies (e.g. National Park Service, National Marine Sanctuary 
Program) to conduct biogeographic assessments of coastal resources. The 
position described here is for an assistant to work on two such 
assessments, specifically, the characterization, monitoring, and 
assessment of coral reef ecosystems in the US Caribbean, as well as the 
offshore bank communities of Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary.

1. Experience or training in tropical marine ecology

2. Scuba diving certification (advanced open water certification or a 
minimum of 100 dives)

3. Comfortable working long hours in the field

4. Willingness and ability to travel

5. Ability to have fun while working as part of a team

6. Strong verbal and written skills


1. Experience or training in basic statistical methods

2. Experience with statistical software (e.g. SAS, JMP)

*Nice to have*

1. Experience with Geographical Information System technology

2. Nitrox certification

3. Ability to identify Gulf or Caribbean marine flora and fauna

4. Small boat handling abilities

The candidate will be supporting a team of marine scientists with strong 
analytical capabilities. Extensive field work is the focus of this 
position (3+ months/year) including surveying fishes and their 
associated habitats using SCUBA, preparing for missions, managing and 
maintaining equipment, etc. After completion of a particular field 
mission the candidate will be responsible for assisting with data entry, 
QA/QC, conducting statistical analyses, writing up results and 
developing poster and oral presentations. The candidate must be a team 
player who can work with minimal oversight.
