Reuben:
I've found this forum to be very useful in answering all my underwater video questions:
http://www.uwdv.com/forums/index.php
I use purely HiDef for all my filming and have used cameras that have captured to both miniDV and hard disc. You will find that in quality, both mediums are equal. BUT, there is no comparison in price. A hard disk that captures ~45min will cost over $4300 compared to a miniDV tape at ~$5.
As David stated, a 3 CCD chip cam is significant enough for research purposes and will cost almost 50% less than a HiDef cam, especially when you include the housing. 3 CCD chip is also broadcast quality, granted, broadcast media is surely moving towards HiDef.
Hope this helps!

Dear Reuben
I would ask myself why I need the resolution of HD first? You can
get high quality images using a 3 chip for much less price. Actually
you can get a housing and a camera for the price of an HD camera.
Ive used the Sony and the Panasonic but not underwater. We arte
holding off since the memory time is too limited for underwater
unless you go lower res, and then whats the point of HD? The p-2
technology is coming but we are still shooting the HD with tapes
until the bugs get worked out. The Panasonic is said to overheat in
the housing and shut down but that might have been resolved.
Good luck
David
