Shannon,
Impact considerations should also include;
 - The absence of a coastal setback (which should be a prerequisite for
any coastal construction)
 - Increased potential for storm related damage, unless building codes
and standards are exemplary (including human life, costs and further
environmental damage)
 - Effects of pile driving on benthic and transient resources (temporary
but loud)
 - I am not sure what bug problems are like in Virgin Gorda, but in the
Bahamas, structures like these would have the added complication of
limiting access to sandfly breeding beaches for raking, leading to more
use of insecticides /repellents by residents, and the potential release
to the marine environment.
I am sure there are more, but some thoughts for you.

Based on experiences in East Malaysia and Dubai, major
issues would include:

Presumption - NOT DIRECTLY ON CORAL

Status and maintenance of freshwater and sewerage
connections and disposal - presumably for direct
discharges

Wind/Wave induced current changes and the fact that
the villas would be sighted in shallow, intertidal,
low wave, low current regime to begin with - loss of
wind induced currents and circulation would heighten
any nutrient effect in the underlying water

Piling/piers form attached media reactor for increased
bacteria and attached growth

Secondaries include villa debris (planting boxes,
etc.), motor boating liquids/petro, oils, grease,

Direct shading relatively minor as the water would
have been shallow and probably sand bottom..

Hi,

I have just completed the second year of my degree in Zoology, as part
of
the final year i am required to carry out an individual research project
on
a relevant topic.
I would like to look at the effects of sedimentation on corals. I am
going
travelling in South America this summer and I am hoping to carry out the

research whilst there.
I am hoping to look at the reefs of the coast of venezuela, using
Margarita
Island as a base, but dont know much about the local area/ conditions or

where I could possibly borrow equipment needed.

Any information or relevant exsisting papers would be greatly
appreciated,

Thank-you for your time,

Laura Robinson

Stilt houses also often involve discarded cloth and plastic bags (or
those
blown off a porch) which wrap around coral colonies, 'smothering' them.

Pratik

Send the info to the List, not to me personally.

Palm Jumeirah didn't have any stilt houses
