Harlan Lee & Associates is seeking a Research Associate with appropriate
background in ocean science, marine or maritime issues, or other
relevant background to fill a full-time position, available immediately,
at the federal interagency office Ocean.US.

*Background on Ocean.US*

Ocean.US is a federal interagency office that is moving to a new
location in Silver Spring, Maryland.  It functions as the National
Office for Integrated and Sustained Ocean Observations and was
established by the Congressionally-created National Oceanographic
Partnership Program (NOPP).  Since its establishment in 2000, Ocean.US
has assisted with the development of an Integrated Ocean Observing
System (IOOS), the U.S. contribution to a Global Ocean Observing System,
and to the Global Earth Observation System of Systems.

*Requirements for the Position*

The Research Associate should have a Bachelor's degree with five years'
experience in relevant concepts and operations.  An equivalent
combination of education and experience is acceptable.  Further, the
candidate will have experience in telecommunications and office systems,
computers, word processing, facsimile, and xerographic equipment. 
Personal computer literacy is required: internet, e-mail, and Microsoft
Office (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).  The candidate must also be
proficient with Excel, Access or equivalent database and spreadsheet
programs.  Six times per year the Research Associate may be required to
travel to a meeting outside of the metropolitan Washington, DC area. 

*Job Responsibilities*

The functions of the Research Associate include aiding in the
coordination of development plans for an Integrated Ocean Observing
System (IOOS) for the U.S. The Research Associate will report directly
to the Senior Research Associate, who will assign tasks according to
periodically updated work plans and as needed.  Tasks assigned by the
Senior Research Assistant, or other senior Ocean.US staff, may include: 

    * Conduct literature research for materials relevant to the needs of
      the Ocean.US office in developing IOOS
    * Draft background papers, presentations, and status reports
      describing the progress in ocean observing system activities
    * Organize, or assist in organizing, meetings and workshops
    * Draft, or assist in drafting, and publish workshop reports from
      meetings and workshops hosted by Ocean.US for the development of IOOS
    * Assist the Public Relations/Marketing Specialist in preparing
      outreach materials to describe to the public, federal government,
      state governments and regional bodies the national and regional
      importance of IOOS
    * Assist the Public Relations/Marketing Specialist in the
      maintenance of the Ocean.US web site with weekly and/or daily
      updates of current and useful information, links and documentation
      on the planning and implementation of the IOOS, and
    * Represent Ocean.US at various meetings and workshops both in
      Washington, DC and outside of the metropolitan Washington, DC area
