Assistant/Associate Extension Agent (Marshall Islands Coastal Management
Extension Agent) , position number 86330T, UHM Sea Grant, (Majuro, Rep.
of the Marshall I), temporary, non-tenure track, Majuro, Republic of the
Marshall Islands (RMI) Duties: The responsibilities and primary
functions include, but are not limited to: Work with the CMAC and
appropriate natural resource management agencies to help with the review
of shoreline development projects, land use planning and coastal hazards
mitigation. Assist with outreach activities designed to raise awareness
about coastal issues targeting especially the private sector (i.e.,
businesses and private landowners) and the general public. Work with the
public and private sectors to identify "best shoreline development
practices" that avoid adverse impacts to valuable coastal resources.
Assist with research that examines the potential for sustainable sand
and coral mining for beach nourishment. Provide technical assistance for
tourism-related coastal development activities. Conduct site visits and
write technical reports and recommendations that avoid or mitigate
coastal hazards including coastal erosion and climate change impacts,
and incorporate the understanding of coastal hazards and processes in
coastal land use planning. Provide unbiased technical information to the
public relating to the application of coastal management principles and
rules. Assist in the development and implementation of research projects
relating to coastal hazards and land use. Help in obtaining funding to
support research projects and publish results. Produce performance
reports and work plans that satisfy granting agency, UH Sea Grant and
the National Sea Grant Office reporting requirements. Work with other
Sea Grant agents and designated partners operating in the RMI to assist
them with sustainable economic development activities (e.g. aquaculture)
and facilitate implementation as instructed. Teach one course annually
at the College of the Marshall Islands related to coastal processes
and/or coastal resource management. Other duties as assigned. Minimum
qualifications: Assistant: A Master's degree from a college or
university of recognized standing in ocean or earth science, engineering
or geography with major course work in coastal processes or land use,
coastal science, ocean policy, coastal zone management, natural resource
management or planning or a related field; At least three years of
successful experience in Cooperative Extension work, Sea Grant Extension
work or equivalent in research relevant to coastal processes; Ability to
exercise independent judgment and to assume responsibility for
developing an Extension program; Ability to work harmoniously with other
agents in an integrated Extension system and with related agencies and
the public. Skilled in facilitation and experience with collaborative
research and outreach projects. Willingness and demonstrated ability to
work under underdeveloped conditions in remote locations. Demonstrated
experience working in multi-cultural, multilingual settings in
independent roles. Associate: A Master's degree from a college or
university of recognized standing in ocean or earth science, engineering
or geography with major course work in coastal processes or land use,
coastal science, ocean policy, coastal zone management, natural resource
management or planning or a related field, and in addition to the
Master's, 15 credit hours of post-baccalaureate academic work in the
fields listed above; At least four years of experience as Extension
faculty member or its equivalent in relation to the fields listed above
in the next lower rank; demonstrated ability to independently develop
and lead an effective extension program; proven administrative ability
to conduct a well organized program in County Extension or Sea Grant
program, and to work harmoniously with the agents of other counties in
an integrated Extension program and with related public agencies.

Desirable qualifications: Familiarity with and ability to analyze data
related to coastal processes and hazards including oceanographic and
meteorological data and familiarity with statistical methods of
interpreting this data. Knowledge and ability to train others in
Geographic Information System (GIS) applications. Familiarity with basic
surveying and mapping techniques; familiarity with island shoreline
characteristics and cultural/recreation practices including: historical
shoreline erosion rates and trends, seasonal wave dynamics, coastal
processes and hazards, wave reef interactions; familiarity with common
coastal hazard mitigation strategies and impacts on natural resources
from resource extraction and restoration operations, beach erosion and
formulation, littoral budgets and impacts of alternative shore
stabilization technologies and situations; Knowledge of computer
programs and geographical information systems including oceanographic
wave and beach numerical modeling. Previous experience in international
