Beginning in the fall of Academic Year 2009-2010, the Khaled bin Sultan
Living Oceans Foundation will support up to three new dedicated and hard
working doctoral students and/or post-doctoral researchers. Fellows must
conduct applied research that contributes to the Foundation’s efforts to
improve management and conservation of coral reef resources and habitats,
especially focusing on understanding factors that promote the health and
resilience of coral reefs. Research activities should occur in countries
visited during the Expedition the Global Reef Expedition: Science without
Borders Program (2010-2012) (see www.globalreefexpedition.com). We are
especially interested in applicants whose research projects involve broad
scale surveys and/or sampling across western Atlantic, Pacific and Indian
Oceans, with field activities conducted from the Golden Shadow research
platform during the three year Expedition. This includes activities such as:
1) affect of ocean acidification on coral reefs; 2) characterizing
zooplankton diversity, abundance and their role in coral reef resilience; 3)
understanding coral diseases and bleaching dynamics; 4) genetic connectivity
within and between reefs; and 5) geological, biological and environmental
processes that structure and maintain healthy reefs. The Living Oceans
Foundation Fellowship will provide up to a $35,000 to cover legitimate
educational and research expenses. For additional details and application
information see www.livingoceansfoundation.org/ Deadline for applications
is May 31, 2009.
