[Coral-List] Caribbean Acropora Spawn

Hi Jennifer:

A post I made Tuesday early am seems to have disappeared in Cyberspace so here it is again.

Monday night we had a moderate spawn at the Tres Palmas reserve with ca. 25 % of the A palmata spawning in our area. We collected spawn from ca. 8 large colonies plus some plankton tows. Are larvae are now in the early gastrula stage and we have approximately 250K of them in culture. They are being used in experiments on effects of CO2 enrichment (Pedro Medinas-Rosas), settlement cues including neuropeptides (Dr. Patrick Erwin), settlement behavior and swimming orientation (Katie Flynn) and misc developmental work (Szmant). Since we filled our cofers with all we needed we did not go back out Tuesday.

As I stood on the beach explaining to a local lady [who appended herself to our group when she asked what we were doing there; her first night snorkel and spawning event] what we were doing and how we got to our current level of knowledge about the reproductive biology of Caribbean corals, I realized that it was 25 years ago that I started trying to figure out the timing of spawning for the local species. In July 1984 I was working in la Parguera with whomever would volunteer to help me (mostly Linda Riggs and Roy Armstrong). It's taken awhile to get where we are now but it is gratifying that something I started so long ago is now finally paying off big time!

Regards,

Alina Szmant
