Seychelles Benthic Habitat Map Viewer Now Online

A coral reef ecosystem habitat map viewer for the Seychelles Islands is now
available through the Khaled bin Sultan Living Ocean Foundation’s GIS Data
Portal: http://www.livingoceansfoundation.org. This unique GIS application
was created in partnership with Towson University’s Center for GIS (CGIS)
(Towson, Maryland). The baseline habitat maps contained in the viewer were
developed by the Cambridge Coastal Research Unit (CCRU), University of
Cambridge (UK), from airborne and SCUBA survey data collected in 2005.
Twelve high-resolution benthic habitat maps are accessible through this
interactive web application; 10 from the Amirantes Group and 2 from the
Alphonse Group. The Amirantes habitat maps include African Banks, Remire
Reef, D’Arros and St. Joseph, Desroches, Sand Cay, Poivre, Etoile, Boudeuse,
Marie-Louise, and Desnoeufs. Alphonse, Bijoutier and St. François are
represented by two habitat maps in the Alphonse Group. An interactive
habitat reporting tool is included in this application which allows the user
to perform basic statistical analyses. Other live viewers and downloadable
data on LOF’s GIS Data Portal include St. John/St. Thomas, St. Croix/Buck
Island and the Bahamas.
