Dear coral list,

Could you please add the following job posting to the list. Many thanks.

GIS and Data Officer

Net Gain 'The North Sea Marine Conservation Zone Project'

The Net Gain MCZ Project has been set up to plan and develop a network of Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) in the English North Sea. The goal of the MCZ network will be to contribute to the UK Governments commitment of establishing an ecologically coherent network of effectively managed Marine Protected Areas by 2012 with the aim to safeguard marine biodiversity and to ensure the long-term sustainability of marine resources.

Recommendations for the MCZs will be made by a Stakeholder Group, using ecological and physical data collated and mapped by the Project Team in a central GIS and database, and combined with socio-economic information collected from individual marine users. The project must ensure that the final network is supported by a wide cross section of stakeholders, and is successful in providing protection for marine habitats and species.

Your role

We are seeking a GIS and Data Officer to provide technical support in acquiring, managing and analysing the spatial information underpinning the MCZ planning process. You will assist in acquiring and digitising marine datasets, developing and managing databases, preparing GIS data for analysis in decision support software (Marxan), and interpreting analytical outcomes. You will be expected to produce outputs of your work in the form of maps and reports, and should be confident working together with other members of the project team, Stakeholder Group and other project partners.

You should have a good degree or equivalent in a relevant scientific subject (marine biology, biology, geography, GIS or environmental sciences), strong database skills, and proven experience in GIS projects, preferably with an environmental or marine theme. A further degree in GIS, experience in marine spatial mapping projects and experience in the region is desirable. The successful candidate will be employed by The Yorkshire and Humber Seafood Group and based at the Deep in Hull.

Salary: £20,000 to £23,000 pa depending on experience. Full time post, 37 hours per week.
