The Swire Hong Kong PhD Scholarship tenable at The Swire Institute of Marine Science,
The University of Hong Kong: Call for Applications
Applications are invited for The Swire Hong Kong PhD Scholarship in Marine Biology. This
scholarship is open to outstanding higher degree candidates wishing to conduct research for a Ph.D.
degree at The Swire Institute of Marine Science, The University of Hong Kong. Potential candidates
should have a First Class or an Upper Second Class Honours degree plus an MPhil degree, and have a
proven interest in marine biology. Applicants who are applying on the basis of qualifications from
overseas universities or comparable institutions of which the language of teaching and/or examination
is not English are required to satisfu certain English proficiency requirements of the Graduate School,
The University of Hong Kong.
The candidate will undertake research on any aspect of marine biology in Hong Kong and South East
Asia under the supervision of a member of staff at The Swire Institute of Marine Science (see
htto://www.hku.hVswimsA. The successful candidate will also take up occupancy in the SWIMS
Residence.
The Scholarship shall be tenable for either 3 or 4 years, depending on the candidates' qualifications.
The successflrl candidate will receive a monthly stipend of HK$13,100, plus an associated research
grant of HK$25,000 per annum.
Candidates wishing to apply should initially contact a member of staff at SWIMS to draft a research
proposal for their study. This should be less than 6 pages of ,A.4, inclusive of references and tables /
figures. The proposal should highlight the area of study, the questions being addressed and the
importance / relevance of their proposed research. This should be submitted, together with a full CV,
including the names and addresses of two referees to Ms. Sylvia Yiu, The Swire Institute of Marine
Science, The University of Hong Kong, Shek O, Hong Kong (fax: + 852 28092197; email:
