Position Title: 2 Assistant/Associate Professors in Marine and
Environmental Studies.
The University of the Virgin Islands is a Historically Black publicly
supported land-grant institution. UVI, in association with the National
Science Foundation (NSF) funded Virgin Islands Experimental Program to
Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR) is seeking faculty who will
ensure high academic standards in a nurturing and learner-centered
environment in keeping with our HBCU status through scholarly research
and teaching excellence. Appointees must be able to work productively
with research colleagues and students of diverse ethnic and cultural
backgrounds; serve on the University's committees; and contribute to the
development of the University's Vision 2012.
The Center for Marine and Environmental Studies (CMES) is seeking 5
candidates over the next 3 years for research, non-tenure track
positions who will join the research team at CMES and have the
opportunity to participate in an exciting new interdisciplinary research
initiative on Integrated Caribbean Coastal Ecosystems. This current
request for applicants is for 2 faculty positions. Researchers at CMES
are investigating biotic, physical and human interactions in Caribbean
coastal ecosystems, the extent to which oceanographic and climatic
forces are affecting coral reef ecosystems, and related social, health
and economic impacts on Caribbean island communities. With funding from
NSF, VI-EPSCoR is expanding the Center's core facilities and supporting
CMES research in the areas of Evolutionary and ecological patterns and
processes, Ocean and coastal processes, and Environmental analysis and
management. The successful candidates will participate in
interdisciplinary research as members of CMES research teams and will be
assured of significant release time for research during their first few
years of employment within the program. The successful candidates will
have the opportunity to teach in the Masters in Marine and Environmental
Science, a joint program between CMES and the Division of Science and
Mathematics (DSM). There are also opportunities to teach in the DSM
undergraduate program. This position announcement is for: 
UVI seeks to fill two faculty positions at the rank of Assistant
Professor or Associate Professor with instructional skills and research
interests in any combinations of the following areas: Physical
Oceanography with expertise in general circulation modeling and
experience working with biologists in biophysical coupled models;
Coastal Geomorphology with experience on source to sink sediment
dynamics and watershed modeling; Natural Resource Economics or Social
Science with experience working with natural scientists on coupled
natural and human systems; Microbiology; Epizootiology of marine
diseases; or Phytoplankton Ecology.
Candidates should have expertise in at least one of these fields in
application to tropical coastal/marine ecosystems. Extra consideration
will be given candidates with experience in the Caribbean.
Post-doctoral experience is preferred.  The successful candidates will
develop and maintain an active, extramurally-funded research program in
his or her areas of specialty.  The candidates will also be expected to
carry out normal faculty responsibilities including committee
assignments. The candidates will be expected to start in the Fall
semester 2009 or when the positions are filled.
Rank and compensation will be based on research and teaching experience.
