Chumbe Island Coral Park

Chumbe Island Coral Park (CHICOP) is a conservation and education project, funded by its eco-tourism facilities. CHICOP conserves and manages a Marine Sanctuary and a Forest Reserve, both located at Chumbe Island, 12 km southwest of Stone Town, Zanzibar, Tanzania. The Education Programme focuses on providing environmental education to students from Zanzibari primary and secondary schools. (For more information, please visit www.chumbeisland.com).

 

Project Coordinator 

The position of Project Coordinator will manage the project "Environmental Education and Conservation Expansion in Zanzibar" is a full-time opportunity for the duration of 18 months. The person will be based in CHICOP's headquarters office on Unguja Island, Zanzibar.

 

The Overall Objectives are to develop and make available local environmental education resources to formal and non-formal educators and learners in Zanzibar, and NGOs, CBOs and community members.  The project will promote knowledge and capacity-building to foster environmental conservation and contribute to achieving sustainable, integrated coastal zone management in 10 coastal communities in Southern Zanzibar by 2011.

 

More specifically the Objectives are as follows:

1. Facilitators of environmental education, including NGOs, are equipped with a locally appropriate educator's guide and learner materials for participatory & experiential teaching of environmental education to children, youth and adults.

2. A cadre of trainers has the capacity to facilitate non-formal environmental education with children, youth and adults using the new teaching and learning resources and to support the roll-out of environmental education in 10 coastal communities in Southern Zanzibar. 

3. 10 coastal communities in Southern Unguja have improved knowledge and understanding of environmental issues that affect them and are actively engaged in the sustainable, integrated coastal zone management in their communities.

 

Personal Specification Requirements

o       Educated to at least Master's Degree level in environmental education or related/relevant discipline. 

o       Fluent in English, both spoken and written.

o       Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

o       A genuine interest in nature and environmental education.

o       Experience from writing formal reports.

o       Computer literate.

o       Strong planning, problem-solving and organization skills

o       Ability to work well within a team environment 

o       Ability to adapt to and respect the cultural environment of a Muslim society

o       Experience in project management

o       Broad knowledge of tropical marine life / ecosystems as well as global conservation issues.

 

Desirable Qualifications

o       Driving license.

o       Fluent in Kiswahili, both spoken and written.

o       Experience living in Zanzibar or coastal East Africa
