Dear listers,

may I draw your attention to a short report
by Dana Riddle and Sara Peck
about the spawning behaviour of
Pocillopora eydouxi in Hawai'i.

>From the report:

The
spawning habits of P. eydouxi in Hawaii are very similar to those of
Pocillopora meandrina.

These similarities exist:

  * hermaphroditic
    * broadcast spawner, ejecting discrete and
separate gametes (not in
bundles)
    * capable of
‘selfing’
    * overlapping of spawning episodes with P.
meandrina
    * spawning occurs at or a few days after the full moon
during spring
(June is the only confirmed month)
    * spawning
occurs an hour or so after sunrise
    * small oocytes (~80
microns)
    * eggs contain zooxanthellae transmitted from parent
colony (vertical
transmission)
    * eggs negatively buoyant
    * spawning events are timed for gamete release just a couple of
hours
before low tide (possibly to ensure mixing and lessened
gamete
dilution)
    * a single colony can spawn one at least
two consecutive mornings
