    Applications are invited for three Internships for 2011 at the Central
   Caribbean Marine Institute based at the Little Cayman Research Centre.  Full

   CCMI Scientist in Residence 2011



   The Scientist in Residence (SIR) is responsible for the field research
   programme of CCMI at the Little Cayman Research Centre.   We are compiling a
   long-term ecological database to better understand Coral Reef Connectivity
   and Resilience and to determine indications of coral reef stress as a result
   of climate change.

   In  addition  to collecting, analyzing and organizing historical data,
   responsibilities include grant writing, publishing, and being the teaching
   assistant for CCMI's college field courses. We are specifically looking for
   an individual who has the capability of providing leadership in the local
   community, communicating their work and CCMI's projects with dive shops,
   resorts, and local government on a regular (weekly) basis and organizing a
   monthly lecture series as important elements of working at the Little Cayman
   Research Centre.   The SIR is responsible for the maintenance, upkeep, and
   proper usage of the wet and dry laboratories at the research station, along
   with maintaining all equipment inventory.


   Responsibilities include:
     * Developing a seasonal field research schedule with the assistance of the
       Director of Research.
     * Collecting, compiling and analyzing data for ongoing research projects:

     * Collecting and processing data and samples for the Connectivity and
       Resilience Project (Juvenile Coral Project - juvenile tagged coral study
       and community structure study)
     * Working with the resident scientific team to finalize the 10-year AGRRA
       study
     * Monitoring bleaching and disease outbreaks
     * Organizing and managing the team working on the deep reef research
       programme

     Preparing the final report for sponsors. Due August 15^th, 2011.

     Meeting publications and abstract deadlines established at the beginning
   of the season.

     Writing research grants that will help fund the long-term ecological
   research programme.

     Coordinating our annual regional training workshop.

     Overseeing bi-weekly ICON CREWS maintenance, evaluating calibrations, and
   monitoring alerts.

     Assisting with teaching for CCMI college-level courses and assisting
   students with independent research projects.



   Qualifications:

   Scientist in Residence should have:

     * a minimum of 3 years of prior relevant post-graduate experience in coral
       reef ecological research
     * excellent communications and writing skills
     * excellent data analysis and statistical analysis skills
     * history of publication
     * image analysis and GIS experience a plus
     * experience working independently and in remote areas
     * Dive Master Certification, with instructor level preferred
     * PhD degree (preferred) in marine science (or related field)



   Term:

   9-12 months; renewable, pending funding.  Employment begins January, 2011;
   position may become a permanent position.



   Benefits:

   Room and Board at the research station (shared accommodations), stipend (up
   to $500/month w/MSc; up to $1000 w/PhD), airfare reimbursement up to $500,
   and work permit fees.

   CCMI Research Assistant / Intern 2011



   By being the assistant to the Scientist in Residence, the Research Assistant
   will be responsible for collecting, sample processing, and analyzing data
   for the ongoing Long Term Assessment and Monitoring Project (LAMP). He/she
   will assist with all in-house research programmes and projects and will have
   a unique opportunity of gaining extensive field and lab research experience
   at the Little Cayman Research Centre.    The Research Assistant / Intern
   will likewise be responsible for daily meal set-up and clean-up, along with
   providing assistance in dive operations for resident groups.



   Research Assistant Intern Responsibilities include:



   Research & Conservation:

     * Complete the 2010 LAMP project, which includes collecting and processing
       samples and completing final report (and professional abstract) by
       August 20^th.
     * Compile all databases and prepare a final report and comparison LAMP
       report by August 20^th..
     * Work with current students and research assistants in compiling all
       image analyses data of photos of juvenile corals and data collected for
       the Biodiversity Research Program (shallow to intermediate depth reef
       database).
     * Archive data for our Biodiversity Research Program, for the Deep Reef
       Video Database, and for the Recruitment photo database.



   Research Administration:

     * Develop a pdf library and bibliography (and brief description of the
       work and results) for all research completed by resident scientists,
       visiting scientists, and students; ensure this is up to date on the CCMI
       website and file copies deposited in the CCMI File Store.
     * Work  jointly  with the Education and Outreach Intern in Community
       Outreach by:

     * Preparing  informational  fliers  (and  providing  information for
       newsletters) for the Little Cayman community of the research performed
       at the Little Cayman Research Centre.
     * Organizing, coordinating and promoting visiting researcher talks on
       Little Cayman.
     * Making presentations at the local resorts on Little Cayman on a weekly
       basis, promoting the work of CCMI and our Dollar a Dive campaign.
     * Writing press releases and compiling information for our newsletter
       about the work being done at LCRC.
     * Depositing all promotional material in the CCMI File Store.



   Scientific Leadership in CCMI and Visiting K-12 programmes:

     * Work  jointly  with  the  Education and Outreach Intern to provide
       scientific leadership for field trips and lectures during SeaCamp and
       other  K-12  programmes  (including Ocean Literacy and Eco-Weekend
       Programmes).
     * Assist Scientist in Residence with college programmes, leading field
       trips, assisting with field projects, and developing promotional posters
       and abstracts, along with a group publication (for the web).



   Qualifications:

   The Research Assistant / Intern should have

     * prior relevant experience in coral reef biology research,
     * excellent communications and writing skills.
     * data analysis skills
     * capable of working independently on a small remote island.
     * Dive Master Certification preferred.
     * Masters degree in marine related science preferred.

    

   Term:

   3- 6 Months (March/June 1 - August 30);

    

    

   Benefits:

   Room and Board at the research station (shared accommodations) and $250 per
   month stipend.

   Interns will be reimbursed one round trip air fare ticket of up to $500 to
   Little Cayman, providing he/she stays in Little Cayman for the full term of
   the internship.

   CCMI Education and Outreach Intern 2011



   The  Education  and  Outreach Intern will report directly to the Field
   Operations Manager.  Responsibilities will include local community outreach,
   as well as taking the lead in teaching all CCMI resident K-12 education
   programmes at the Little Cayman Research Centre (LCRC). These programmes
   include Eco-Weekends, Marine Ecology and Sea Camp, and CCMI's Ocean Literacy
   Programme, which provides teacher training and educational opportunities for
   primary school students both at LCRC and on Grand Cayman.



   When education programmes are not in session, the Education and Outreach
   Intern  will be responsible for 4 hours per day of office duty and for
   offering tours at the research station..  He/she will be responsible for
   making  sure  that  the  main  guest  facilities  are  kept  clean and
   well-maintained at all times.



   Education and Outreach Intern Responsibilities include:



   Outreach Administration:

     * Working jointly with a Research Assistant, the E&O Intern will assist
       with Community Outreach by:

       Cayman Research Centre.

     * Assisting the lead instructor for all Teachers' Workshops.
     * Serving as lead instructor for all local K-12 programs (including Ocean
       Literacy and Eco-Weekend Programmes), working with the Research Intern
       to provide adequate research and science components to the curriculum.



   Qualifications:

   Intern should have

     * prior relevant K-12 teaching experience in science-based programs,
     * excellent communications and writing skills.
     * be self motivated and be capable of working independently on a small
       remote island.
     * Dive Master Certification preferred.
     * Must hold a minimum of MSc degree in a marine-related science.

    

   Term:

   8 Months (Jan - August);

    

    

   Benefits:

   Room and Board at the research station (shared accommodations) and up to
   $500 per month stipend.

   Intern will be reimbursed one round trip air fare ticket of up to $500 to
   Little Cayman, providing he/she stays for the full term of the internship.
