Colombia celebrates every 5th of December The
National Day of the Reef, since 2008 http://iyor.org/focalpoints/countries/colombia/default.asp (Second international year of the reef, IYOR
2008). In 2011, the fiesta will be held in the largest Colombian coral reefs area,
the archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina.
From
here we reveal the best news:
(1)
Thanks to the rights of petition sent to the Presidency of the
Colombian Republic by our Foundation
ICRI Colombia in Pro of the Coral Reefs, and by the popular actions performed
by CORALINA , institution that protects
the SEAFLOWER Reserve of
Biosphere: The Oil exploration in San Andrés will not be allowed due to the
potential threats against the resilience
of reefs and the livelihoods of the residents and tourists of the Archipelago
of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina .
(2)
Also due to the calls of environmentalists, there will not be allowed the
development of a huge Foreign Hotel complex, on the beaches close to the coral
reefs of the National Natural Park Tayrona Park, Arrecifes
(3)
The lionfish is being controlled around the country by fishermen and dive
operators trained in fisheries linked to RENOBOS, Colombians Reefs network of observers;
network created by the Colombian Initiative in Pro of coral Reefs led by
our Foundation ICRI Colombia
(4)
Colombia was confirmed as an active country that follows the calls for action
sent by the ICRI Secretariat by involving the Civil Society to increase the
community participation in order to improve the coral reef management
effectiveness
(5)
The ecotourism development is a priority concern of social responsibility in
the areas of reefs in the country. For
example, for this celebration in San Andrés, Copa Airlines www.copaair.com granted
us with local tickets. The Hotel DECAMERON http://www.decameron.com/ provided accommodation during the
environmental campaign the first and second week of December. To capture images
that disclose massively by newspapers and newscasts in the country, We have the
local support from Jorge 2 Oceans, this company produces coral reefs videos and
photos www.exploresanandres.com with Help 2 Oceans Foundation. We intend to
be witnesses on behalf of civil society, of the coral reef management effectiveness
in this marine protected Area, which is the one of the largest in the Caribbean
region and the 7th largest in the world, and that is under the administration
of CORALINA. To involve the community will be asking the perceptions of the
stakeholders and We will provide to them environmental education about the coral
reefs and their ecological, social and
economic values.
