Name of the Position: Postdoctoral position on the microbial ecology of marine invertebrates

Description:
A 3-year shared postdoc position between the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and KAUST’s (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology) Red Sea Research Center is available from March, 2012 on.

The project is an international collaboration between the Voolstra lab at KAUST (http://faculty.kaust.edu.sa/sites/christianvoolstra/Pages/home.aspx) and the newly established Apprill lab at WHOI in the Marine Chemistry & Geochemistry Department (http://www.whoi.edu/sbl/liteSite.do?litesiteid=39752). The postdoc will work jointly at WHOI and KAUST in a Collaborative Fellows program.

The project focuses on microbial ecology of marine invertebrates and will involve bacterial genome sequencing, assembly, and annotation, FISH-based detection of microbial communities, and metabolomics profiling of bacterial cultivates using mass spectrometry.

The ideal candidate is expected to be an independent and motivated individual with excellent communication skills and a degree in any of the following disciplines: Microbial Ecology, Genomics, Bioinformatics, and/or Marine Biology. Sound knowledge in any or all skills is welcome: sequence assembly, sequence annotation, microbial genome analysis, 16S data analysis (e.g. ARB, SILVA, etc.), next-generation sequence datasets, FISH, and FISH-probe and –primer design.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is a world-renowned private, independent, not-for profit corporation dedicated to research and higher education at the frontiers of ocean science. WHOI was recently ranked within the top 2 institutes for post-doctoral study in the U.S and has an active post-doctoral community (http://www.whoi.edu/pda/).

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is a dynamic new university campus and campus community in Saudi Arabia that opened in September 2009 and that aims to become the research university of excellence in the Middle East. The campus is located directly at the Red Sea, near Jeddah.
