12th ICRS – Call for papers
Cairns, Queensland, Australia July 9-13th, 2012
Theme: Ocean Acidification
Mini Symposia: MS8E Growth records in coral cores
Title: A changing climate for coral growth: getting to the core of the problem
Convenors: Tim Cooper, Janice Lough and Neal Cantin
Sustained production of calcium carbonate skeleton forms the heart of tropical coral reef ecosystems. Massive corals provide historical records of annual linear extension, skeletal density and calcification rates spanning the period where human impacts on the marine environment have become increasingly evident. These archives allow historical baselines to be established that are being used to unravel the consequences of rapid environmental and climatic change on coral reefs.
This mini-symposium will bring together studies that:

·         investigate coral growth parameters as tools for detecting changes in environmental conditions on coral reefs;

·         explore processes leading to density band formation;

· examine changes in coral growth rates over space and time particularly studies linking growth characteristics with thermal stress, seawater chemistry and environmental gradients; and

· predict future coral growth rates in an era of rapid environmental change to provide resource managers with the latest information to manage for the resilience of coral reefs.

· Studies of geo-chemical proxies contained within coral skeletons that provide insights into environmental and climate variations on coral reef ecosystems are also welcomed.
The full list of ICRS 2012 Themes and Mini-Symposia are now available on the ICRS 2012 conference website (www.icrs2012.com<http://www.icrs2012.com/>), and the submission of Abstracts will be open from 1 July – 1 October 2011.
