Dear Colleagues

We invite you to consider presenting your latest data and information on automated image analysis and robotics technologies for coral reef science at the 12th International Coral Reef Symposium in Cairns 9-13 July 2011. Abstract submission is now open and will close on 1 October 2011. The full list of ICRS 2012 Themes and Mini-Symposia are now available on the ICRS 2012 conference website (www.icrs2012.com).

Oscar Pizarro and Stefan Williams from the Australian Centre for Field Robotics, David Kline and Greg Mitchell from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and Robin Beaman from James Cook University are organising the Mini-Symposium 5d 'Robots and machine learning techniques aiding coral reef science' (http://www.icrs2012.com/MiniSymposia.htm#5).

This Mini-Symposium will focus on both the processing techniques used to automatically extract relevant information from imagery as well as platforms for improved data collection, such as robotic autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) , as a valuable tool for studying coral reefs.

This session aims to bring together scientists and engineers to review current capabilities (e.g. mapping, automated analysis, computer vision techniques) and applications (e.g. mesophotic reefs, cold-water corals), and discuss future developments (e.g. monitoring with minimal infrastructure, adaptive surveys, diver-based imaging).

Please contact either Oscar (o.pizarro at acfr.usyd.edu.au) or Stefan (stefanw at acfr.usyd.edu.au) in Sydney, or Robin (robin.beaman at jcu.edu.au) in Cairns, or David at SIO (dkline at ucsd.edu) with your suggestions for the session including intended contributions. In addition, suggestions for submissions should also be sent to www.isrs2012.com/abstracts

Best wishes
Oscar, Stefan, Davey, Rob and Greg
