DEPARTMENT:        Center for Marine and Environmental Studies (CMES)
 
ASSIGNMENT:          The successful candidate will administer the operations and programs within CMES and direct the activities of its professional, technical and support staff. The candidate will manage the University of the Virgin Islands’ MacLean Marine Science Center facilities for teaching and research faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students; coordinate the activities of the University of the Virgin Islands Sea Grant program (VIMAS) located on St. Thomas and St. Croix; and provide oversight for the Virgin Islands Environmental Resource Station (VIERS) on St. John. The candidate will also maintain an active externally-funded research program as well as pursue infrastructure development grants; The Director collaborates with UVI academic programs through lectures, mentoring graduate and undergraduate students and attending faculty meetings. The successful candidate will be encouraged to engage the local Virgin Islands community through outreach initiatives which address environmental issues and serve on local and federal advisory councils to provide scientific information for marine resource managers. Specifically, the Director administers the CMES research and outreach programs, manages budgets, drafts memoranda of agreements and contracts, supervises 15 full-time staff, conducts semi-annual performance evaluations, serves on search committees, is the primary contact person for several cooperative agreements with other institutions and agencies, prepares summary reports of CMES activities for UVI's Board of Trustees meetings and insures that CMES programs are aligned with the Universities’ strategic plan.  
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
Ph.D. or equivalent in Marine Science or related discipline and three (3) years of experience managing a department and organization of major projects are required. Record of successfully funded grant proposals; Demonstrated ability to maintain an externally funded research program and to publish in peer reviewed journals; Administrative and budget management skills; Excellent people management skills; Must be computer literate; Knowledge of boats, seamanship and tropical marine coastal systems preferred; Ability to form positive collaborative relationships with state and federal government agencies and non-government organizations.
 
COMPENSATION:    The salary for this position is commensurate with experience. Benefits include the choice between two retirement plans and a group medical, dental, and life insurance program.
