Dear Coral-listers:

Marine Ecology Expeditions (MEE) CaribbeanInternship Program is offering 3
– 6 month work experience internships inBonaire, Dutch Caribbean. The
internships that are currently open require a feeand provide shared
accommodations at the research station. The focus of theinternship program
is the development of the intern’s practical skill baseincluding knowledge
of tropical ecosystems and biota and ecological research. Invaluable
practical experience in scienceand public education is integrated into the
program. By participating in the program, interns willgain real world
experience in scientific study combined with experience inscience
communications and education of the public, which are skills not
normallytaught at universities. The specific ecological skills learned
will depend oncurrent research projects. Interns willbe involved in more
than one study but will have a focus on a specific researchproject that
they will master in terms of research and the ability to
teachnon-scientists about their work through experiential learning.

Examples of skills that might be learned duringthe internship are: all
aspects of marine ecological research (searching forappropriate funding
sources, writing proposals, experimental design; requestingpermits,
conducting research, analyzing results, reporting, and publication inthe
primary literature); prioritizing and scheduling; knowledge of various
tropicalecosystems; fish, algae and invertebrate ID; marine mammal
photo-ID; laboratoryand field skills in feeding ecology; videography and
video analysis; nutrientanalysis; and microbiology. MEE internships are
intense and physicallydemanding. Many activities are repetitive, and must
be done with accuracy andgreat care to ensure the high quality of the
research and public education at MEE
