And I urge all of us to spend the other half of our time to reduce our own carbon and ecological footprint exceeding the targets we advocate.

Dear Colleagues,

If local management of local anthropogenic disturbances to coral reefs is still important, in my opinion the most threatening process on them is by far coral reef mass bleaching. 51.7%±4.0% of reef scientists say that it will be catastrophic or worst (my last opinion poll on this list in December 2011). The evident culprit is human CO2 rise, and its future is highly gloomy.
So I urge reef scientists to devote HALF OF THEIR TIME to fight against CO2 emissions, in a true political meaning. Personally, I am in the IPCC report assessments, and I participate in the official French debate on the “Transition énergétique”. I have contacts with the French branch of the Climate Action Network, and I will be probably in the next electoral campaign of the Green Party. Thanks to do the same, sure it’s a duty.

There is yes another ugly but necessary thing that can be done : to put corals and other reef organisms in liquid nitrogen, as does Mary Hagedorn, Hawaii, for recovery in one to several centuries, otherwise it takes 10 million to recover, as in the preceding mass extinctions. I think in particular that the high-efficient but heat-sensitive zooxanthellae are every day selected against, and reefs are less and less productive. More to come.

About a remark of one of you that reefs will be save if they receive money for their value, I am afraid, but it is the contrary : on the market on ton CO2, it is the decay of reef which absorb CO2 (Ca++ + 2 HCO3- =˃ CaCO3 + CO2 + H2O, i.e. CaCO3 precipitation releases CO2 – for photosynthesis at first). If you have a good management project to destroy reef, I think you can get money from the Green Development Mechanism, just like if you plant trees !!!! With 10 kg CaCO3/m2.year production, the price must be around 0.13 $/m2.year. Decay of reefs is indeed an Earth regulatory process of carbon cycle. Sorry, car or corals, we must chose.

Nonetheless, all the best,
