Sustainble Grenadines Inc. (SusGren) is an environmental NGO committed to
the conservation of the coastal and marine environment and sustainable
livelihoods for the people in the Grenadine Islands between Grenada and St.
Vincent and the Grenadines.

SusGren operates based out of an office on Union Island, but work extends
across the Grenadines Islands (eastern Caribbean). SusGren manages a
diverse portfolio of  coastal and marine resource related projects; current
projects address issues such as sustainable fisheries practices,
alternative livelihood opportunities, coastal restoration, biophysical
monitoring, and community education/public outreach.

SusGren is currently seeking individuals interested in self-supported
internships. These internships provide excellent opportunity for
professional development, and are best suited for individuals who are
self-motivated, possess excellent leadership skills, and who can adapt to
an unpredictable work environment.

*Responsibilities*

SusGren has a small core staff and engages in a diverse range of projects,
meaning that your responsibilities will also be highly varied. Generally
speaking, interns will assist in project implementation; this includes (but
is by no means limited to) report writing, organizing
workshops/events/meetings, conducting field work, developing communications
and outreach materials, delivering outreach and educational programs,
assisting with biophysical monitoring, etc.

SusGren staff will work with potential interns to help define their role
based on their current skills, and to ensure that their professional
development needs can be met.

*Desired Skills & Qualifications*

   - Minimum undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline, or current
   student
   - A general understanding of local and regional environmental issues
   - An ability to complete work with limited supervision
   - Basic computer software skills
   - Excellent written and oral communication skills
   - Available for minimum 2 month commitment (longer terms are preferable)
   - A sense of humour

*Additional Attributes*

If you possess a special skill set (e.g. GIS experience, public
communications, environmental education, grant writing, web design, SCUBA
dive training, etc.) we encourage you to identify this in your application.
When possible we will work to match these skills to address organizational
needs.

*Intern Benefits*

Please note that this is a self-supported internship position. There are no
program fees attached, but interns will need to pay for rent, groceries,
etc., while living on Union Island. Interns are also responsible for the
cost of travel to Union Island. In the case that interns identify possible
sources of funding (grants, scholarships, co-ops, etc.), we will work to
support individuals in securing these funds.

For current students - if there is an opportunity for you to earn academic
credit through a directed studies or similar type of course, we are willing
to fit the internship to meet your needs.

Interns will be exposed to all aspects of working at a small eNGO. They
will have the opportunity to gain both project management and field
experience, and develop a variety of skills that are directly transferable
when seeking future employment in this field.

When possible SusGren will provide interns with the opportunity for
financially supported work-related travel throughout the Grenadine Islands.

SusGren works closely with organizations such as The Nature Conservancy,
The Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute, Birds Caribbean, providing
excellent professional networking opportunities.

Working with SusGren provides the opportunity to have a direct impact on
community members across the Grenadines, and to facilitate progress towards
more environmentally sustainble practices in the region.

The opportunity to live and work on a Caribbean island. Union is a small,
friendly island, which belongs to the stunning group of Grenadines Islands.
Interns have the opportunity to become immersed in the local community, and
take advantage of the many recreational opportunities available
(snorkelling, SCUBA diving, kite-surfing, hiking, etc.). Union is only a
short boat ride away from the Tobago Cays Marine Park (
http://www.tobagocays.org/), who we work with closely.
