This thread began with reference to an article published in a popular diving
periodical that dared to openly discuss some of the threats to coral reefs
including greenhouse gases, rising levels of CO2, burning fossil fuels,
ocean warming and acidification. In the same issue a marine science
icon espoused reasons for optimism because after all "Half the planet's
coral reefs are still in good shape. Ten percent of the sharks, swordfish,
bluefin tuna, groupers, snappers, halibut and wild salmon are still
swimming". Interesting to note that all the while the profane term climate
change never appeared in print, a bete noire, scientific snake oil it
   remains.

Perhaps I should gain solace in the fact that another piece in the same
magazine explored the topic of aquarium diving.

You see there is hope for restoring reefs in the future, it will
just require a modest change of venue.
