Responding in regard to lion fish in the tropics in the Atlantic Ocean.
All indications are that whoever released the lion fish in the wild in the tropical Atlantic knew what they were doing and did so with a
sufficient number of individuals of both sexes in the right location(s) to establish the lion fish for the first time ever in this Atlantic environment.
Just because you do not see lion fish around in a particular area does not mean that they are not there. These are intelligent fish, knowing well how to keep out of sight when they want to do so. They are obviously well adapted to the coral reef environment, wherever that is.
This is a terrible development for the environment hitherto free of such
fish. Clearly concerted efforts should be made to rid them from the
Atlantic where they are intruders, not native, having an adverse effect
on the coral reef fish naturally there.
