Human numbers. high sustained rate of human population growth, number of people eating fishes, number of people living in coastal areas, cutting down trees for food production or charcoal, or palm oil plantations, using fossil fuels for all kinds of activities, doing everything we all do every hour of every day...these are what is responsible for climate change and everything else that is contributing to coral reef degradation (and of every other ecosystem on Earth...coral reefs are in good company). I am glad to see the Sierra Club once again taking up the banner of raising awareness to the issue of reducing human numbers that it and so many other NGOs have dropped over the past 30 years. It is partnering with Population Connection to try to get this issue back into public discussion. I suggest those of you who are not really aware of the human tragedy of this planet participate in the event advertised in the email below. It starts in 1.5 hours. This needs to become the issue of the day. Everything else pales by comparison.
