The University of Bremen, a mid-sized university with approximately 250
professorships and 19,000 students, offers a broad range of disciplines
and competes internationally in top-level research. With its ambitious
institutional strategy, the university was successful in the national
Excellence Initiative as one of only eleven universities in Germany.

Cooperative Junior Research Groups funded by the Excellence Initiative
strengthen the university's capacity for innovation. The group 'Sea
level and coastal changes' has been established in close collaboration
between the MARUM -- Center for Marine Environmental Sciences and at the
University of Bremen and the Leibniz-Center for Marine Tropical Ecology
(ZMT, Bremen).

The Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology GmbH (Leibniz-ZMT GmbH)
in Bremen is a member of the Leibniz Association, which is supported by
the German Federal and State Governments. Through its research,
Leibniz-ZMT GmbH contributes to developing science-based strategies for
sustainable use of tropical coastal systems.

In this framework of rewarding research opportunities and career
prospects for excellent junior researchers the following positions are
offered:

*PhD position***(reference number A111/14)

in earth sciences, with particular focus on coastal geomorphology and
paleo sea levels. The PhD student will work on relative sea level
markers and sea level variability during past interglacials (e.g. MIS
5e) using both databases of published data and new field data that
she/he will collect during his PhD in field locations where the 'sea
level and coastal changes' group is working. The ideal candidate has a
degree in earth or environmental sciences (or similar) and expertise
with both Geographic Information Systems and field geological mapping. A
high level of written and oral English is required. The position is for
a fixed term of 3 years. The earliest starting date is August 1^st ,
2014. Salary corresponds to TV-L E13 for a part-time position (66 %).

Applicants should submit under the above mentioned reference number
their letter of motivation, a CV including copies of certificates, a
publication list if applicable, and contact information of two referees.
Documents should preferably be submitted electronically as a PDF file
(maximum size 2 MB) to the head of the Research Group, Dr. Alessio
Rovere (arovere at marum.de <mailto:arovere at marum.de>), who will also
respond to further inquiries. The call is open until the position is
filled. The review of applications will commence on June 15^th , 2014.

*Postdoctoral Position***(reference number A112/14)**

in earth sciences, with particular focus on coastal geomorphology and
sedimentology.

The postdoc will work in different areas of the world, and her/his
research will be built around these questions: how hydrodynamic model
results of coastal erosion compare with monitored coastal changes? Can
we use hydrodynamic modelling software to produce scenarios of coastal
erosion related to sea-level rise and / or increase of extreme events?
Are tropical coastlines eroding at a global level? The ideal candidate
has a doctoral degree in earth and environmental sciences or engineering
(or similar) and expertise with hydrodynamic models, such as DELFT3d,
MIKE21 or similar. Experience with geographic information systems and/or
field beach monitoring techniques is welcome. A high level of written
and oral English is required. The position is initially for 2 years and
will be funded by (and established at) the ZMT. The earliest starting
date is September 1^st , 2014. Salary corresponds to TV-L E13.

Applicants should submit under the above mentioned reference number
their letter of motivation, a research statement, and a short research
project (max 3 pages excluding literature), a CV including copies of
certificates, a publication list if applicable, contact information of
two referees. Documents should preferably be submitted electronically as
a PDF file (maximum size 2 MB) to the head of the Research Group, Dr.
Alessio Rovere (arovere at marum.de), who will also respond to further
inquiries. The call is open until the position is filled. The review of
applications will commence on June 15^th , 2014.

The University of Bremen has received a number of awards for its gender
and diversity policies and is particularly aiming to increase the number
of female researchers. Applications from female candidates,
international applications and applications of academics with a
migration background are explicitly welcome. Disabled persons with the
same professional and personal qualifications will be given preference.

Basic information on the research group, as well as information on the
group leader can be found at
https://www.marum.de/en/Sea_Level_change.htmlor
http://www.zmt-bremen.de/en/Sea_Level_and_Coastal_Changes.html

Applications should preferably be directed electronically as a single
PDF file with the reference number to Dr. Alessio Rovere
(arovere at marum.de) or by mail to
