 Dear Coral-List

We invite you to submit abstracts for presentations in:

Session 52 of the 13th International Coral Reef Symposium in Honolulu, Hawaii, June 19-24 2016:
Big Data: Using open access, evolving platforms and the emerging field of data science to improve resource management
Details of the session are at - https://www.sgmeet.com/icrs2016/sessionschedule.asp?SessionID=52
This symposium will present papers and posters showing how coral reef science and management is being advanced by significant changes in global data collection, storage, sharing and re-use. This includes citizen/community science; long term field survey; long term satellite image archives; models of reef structure and function that build on field and satellite image data; and data/ code sharing portals. The symposium will demonstrate how scientists, policy makers, managers and stakeholders can use this range of new data collection, storage, analysis and distribution techniques. When coupled with effective knowledge brokering and communication this should enable us to measure , map and model changes to our coral reefs.
Papers are invited that provide examples of new data collection, storage, analysis and distribution techniques to support basic understanding of reef dynamics, which provide a basis for reef management policy decisions at a local to regional and/or global scales. This will include examples of citizen science monitoring programs, or programs that use large data sets in combination with online computing developing approach that are accessible to others. Examples will address how they can be used for quantitatively evaluating the effectiveness of coral reef protection and recovery activities and initiatives applying the best available science.
