We would like to invite you to submit abstracts to ICRS Session 28B - Coral
reefs in
extreme, compromised and marginal environments,
and their roles as refugia - low diversity, non-reef and high latitude
reef systems
Session introduction:
Many coral reefs and coral communities occur in locations where
environmental conditions are outside the perceived optimums for coral
growth and reef development. These include high latitude settings,
locations defined by elevated turbidity regimes, sites subjected to
prolonged or seasonally high or low sea-surface temperatures, areas the
experience
episodic upwelling and any other marginal locations. While the reefs and coral
communities that occur in these settings may often be defined by lower species
diversity,
corals can form resilient communities and build
reef structures in these settings. These locations and their communities may
thus become
important refugia areas for corals and associated ecosystems under climate
change and
ocean acidification.
All presentations and papers on the wide subject of marginal coral
reefs and coral communities are welcome, especially those that
consider: marginal reef ecology and geology, marginal coral
physiology, and the conservation and future perspectives of marginal
reef systems.
The deadline for submission is 15 January 2016
