Position: Operations Director
Organization: Waitt Institute www.waittinstitute.org
Location: Washington, DC; or New York City
Hours: Approximately 40 hours per week, flexible hours
Duration: Minimum of 2-year commitment expected
Compensation: Commensurate with experience
Operations Director will focus on management of operations, budgets, and
contracts, and will report to Waitt Institute (WI) Executive Director (ED).
WI has a small core team, so we are seeking someone who will take an
expansive view of this role, contributing broadly to our mission of
“empowering communities to restore their ocean.” Position could be
part-time for a more experienced candidate; partial telecommuting is
possible.
*Responsibilities:*
- Overall budget and expense management, in coordination with Senior
Accountant and ED
- Site-specific budget and expense management for all Blue Halo
Initiative sites
- Contract management for 6+ contractors
- Reporting (internal, external – publication and dissemination)
- Continually seek opportunities for cost efficiencies
- Identify and vet fundraising opportunities
- Manage WI and site toolkits: centralization, documentation, and
expansion
- Track progress at sites, per program metrics and indicators
- Cross-site information sharing and learning
- Manage institutional paperwork (permitting, licensing, legal,
compliance, tax reporting, etc.)
- Manage office space operations
- Inventory control and maintenance of WI assets
- Order and ship swag for distribution at sites
- Maintain database of site and global contacts
- Manage creation and dissemination of Board meeting materials
- General project research, planning, and coordination, and other duties
as assigned
*Desired qualifications:*
- Strong commitment to science-based, community-driven, sustainable
ocean management
- Expertise with effective and efficient operation of organizations
- Expertise with budget management
- Academic degree(s) in relevant field
- Background in marine policy, science, and economics
- Ability to manage time efficiently and keep track of and prioritize
amongst many tasks
- Ability to complete tasks rapidly with an appropriate level of detail
- Stellar writing, editing, and general communications skills
- Independent and internally-motivated, and flexible in response to
changing assignments
- Expertise with Microsoft Office Suite
- Communications/PR and event planning experience
- Website management (via Wordpress) and graphic design (via Adobe
Illustrator, InDesign)
- General tech/IT know-how and fix-it skills
- SCUBA certification and scientific diving experiences
- Resourcefulness (i.e., MacGyverness)
