REEF Announces Summer Fish Field Methodology Course

August 7-13, 2016

Key Largo, Florida

Description: This one week hands-on course is designed for college
undergraduates and recent graduates focusing on marine biology or related
fields. The course covers commonly used tools and techniques for visual
assessments of reef fishes. Classroom and field experiences will expose
students to Tropical Western Atlantic reef fish identification, size
estimations underwater, surveying reef fishes using transect, roving and
stationery visual techniques, benthic assessments using photo quadrats and
rugosity, and management of survey data.

Requirements: Prospective students must be at least 18 years of age,
enrolled in or a recent graduate of a college level program in marine
biology or a related field; scuba certified, current in their diving skills
and comfortable diving from small boats; physically and mentally capable of
carrying out underwater data gathering and handling of light equipment; US
citizens or in possession of the appropriate US visa.

Course Fee: $780.00 per person, includes dorm style accommodations with
kitchen, 5 days of two tank boat dives including tanks and weights, reef
fish survey materials, REEFNET Fish Identification DVD, certificate of
course completion (earned). Does not include transportation, meals, or
personal diving equipment.

Location: The course will be based at Quiescence Diving Services in Key
Largo, Florida. Diving will take place on the shallow reef areas of John
Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and the Florida Keys National Marine
Sanctuary. Air transportation through Miami (MIA) or Fort Lauderdale (FLL)
allows access by rental car or shuttle. Cooking facilities are available in
the dorm and numerous restaurants are within walking distance.

Schedule: Monday through Friday - daily morning classroom sessions, followed
by afternoon practical sessions during dives, and early evening study and
debriefings. Sunday and Saturday will be travel days.

Participation: Limited to 12 students, ratio of 1 instructor to 6 students.

Course leaders:

Lad Akins, REEF Director of Special Projects

Ellie Splain, REEF Education Program Coordinator

Considerations: This is an inexpensive, fun, educational course that will
benefit any students interested in reef fish data collection in the field.
This course is not a college credit course (though some students may want to
apply on their own for credit from their institution). Students will gain a
strong understanding of field survey tools and techniques applicable to
field work throughout their careers.
