Greetings, coral-listers,

Below is the job description for the new post doc opportunity with Virginia Weis at Oregon State University:

Oregon State University Postdoctoral fellowship in the cell biology of coral symbioses. The position will be in the laboratory of Virginia Weis, Department of Integrative Biology, to study the cellular and molecular dynamics of cnidarian-algal symbioses, including corals. The fellowship is supported by an NSF award to Weis and collaborators Sandra Loesgen (OSU, Chemistry) and Tom Gilmore (Boston University, Biology).

Coral-algal symbioses form the trophic and structural foundation of coral reef ecosystems and are gravely threatened by climate change-related stressors. Despite their central role in coral reef ecosystems, we still lack a basic understanding the mechanisms governing the intimate partnership between corals and their symbiotic algae. This project will examine the cellular events underlying host-symbiont recognition and the role of the host innate immune system in regulation of the symbiosis and symbiosis dysfunction involved in coral bleaching. You will join an exciting collaboration forged between Weis, a career-long coral biologist, Loesgen, a glycan chemist and Gilmore, an expert in cancer biology and immunity. We are examining these events in a sea anemone model system and coral larvae. Travel between collaborating labs and to Hawaii for field work will be intrinsic to the project. Career development including teaching and outreach activities will be encouraged.

Knowledge of cell and molecular techniques required. Experience with imaging techniques, basic computational biology and biostatistics preferred. Please submit CV, cover letter and names of three references to Virginia Weis at weisv at science.oregonstate.edu by March 1, 2016.

Cheers,

Jack
