*Session Description:*


The impact of land-based pollution (LBP) on coral reefs continues to be a
major challenge for scientists, policy makers, managers, stakeholders, and
the people dependent on these resources. Pollutants can impact coral reef
ecosystems in a number of direct and indirect ways; furthermore, there is
wide recognition that the reduction of local stressors may help reef
ecosystems cope with global climate stressors. Past research effort and
management responses have focused on the negative impacts of increased
fluxes of sediment, nutrients, and contaminants to coral reef waters. The
success of management action is locally variable and pressures on
down-stream coastal areas are likely to continue as the scale and intensity
of human activity in watersheds and coastal areas, including agricultural,
urban, and industrial land uses, are forecasted to increase.


This mini-symposium focuses on advancements in understanding the impact of
LBP on coral reef ecosystems, from understanding the sources, transport,
residence time, and fate of LBP from ridge-to-reef, to the ecological
responses of coral reef communities, conservation planning, economics, and
coastal policy. Summaries of current local or regional-scale
interdisciplinary studies, including modeling exercises are encouraged,
especially if they evaluate economics, conservation planning, and
integrated coastal zone management.
