Dear Coral Listers,

I am pleased to announce the publication of Walter Goldberg’s peer-reviewed paper, “Atolls of the World: Revisiting the Original Checklist” in the Atoll Research Bulletin (issue 610, 2016).

Please visit http://opensi.si.edu/index.php/smithsonian/catalog/book/132 to download the paper, which updates and reclassifies the original “Check list of Atolls” by E. H. Bryan (ARB issue 19, 1953) through extensive literature review, modern nautical chart data and remote sensing imagery.

In addition, Dr. Goldberg has established a stable website at http://maps.fiu.edu/gis/goldberg/atolls<https://webaccess.si.edu/owa/redir.aspx?REF=8MY6iZLct4XjW0PCQ4A3M2UGvzomaeGHRdtKCB-aYK36m2EKiZ_TCAFodHRwOi8vbWFwcy5maXUuZWR1L2dpcy9nb2xkYmVyZy9hdG9sbHM.> with an ArcGIS interactive world map showing locations, names, classifications, satellite photos and other information on all atolls listed in the paper. Click on an atoll, then click on the photo for expanded view.

We anticipate the paper, appendices and interactive map will be valuable informational and educational resources, so please share this widely.
Dr. Goldberg was a professor of marine biology for 39 years at Florida International University (retired 2012) and recently published the book The Biology of Reefs and Reef Organisms (U of Chicago Press, 2013). He is currently writing a book on atolls.
Sincerely,

Maggie Toscano
