Dear colleagues,
This is very sad news: Pedro Alcolado is no longer among us. He was a very good scientist, outstanding and well-recognized specialist on sponges and coral reefs, passionate environmentalist, good mentor for young colleagues. He was a proud patriot of his beautiful country Cuba, but he was also really an international scientist. Pedro had a post-graduate education and got his Ph.D. in the Zoological Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg, Russia, and spoke well in Russian, he knew Russian scientific literature as well as Russian culture. He collaborated with many of us here, in the US, and in Caribbean countries.

Pedro was a great friend, I was privileged to know him for long time, and was honored to benefit from his friendship, hospitality and scientific exchange during our discussions. As long as we are here, we will always remember Pedro Alcolado.

I am asking my Cuban colleagues to pass my condolences on to Pedro's family.. Rest in peace Pedro.

Vladimir N. Kosmynin

I am deeply saddened by this message. Pedro was an engaging and productive coral reef and sponge scientist for many decades. What a nice legacy of working on Cuban marine resources and with students and colleagues.

Condolences to Pedro's family, friends, and colleagues for this loss.

Regards, Wes
