Hello Listers,

Happy New Year.I apologize for cross-postings.

REEF announces the recent publication, in Conservation Letters, of work
documenting effectiveness of removal events (derbies) on invasive lionfish
populations. The research, led by Dr. Stephanie Green at Stanford
University's Center for Ocean Solutions, assesses the effects of derbies in
Florida and the Bahamas over a three year period on lionfish abundance and
biomass. Results showed a reduction in lionfish numbers of 52% across an
area of 192 sq km on average. The study is the first to empirically
demonstrate that engaging volunteers in invasive species control can affect
suppression to levels forecast to alleviate predation effects.
