Dear Colleagues,

Please see the request below, which I’m posting for Rita da Silva understaking a study at University of Southern Denmark. Please respond to her directly.

thanks, David
Chair, IUCN Coral Specialist Group

I am working as part of the Species360 Conservation Science Team and we are compiling reports for CITES (the Convention on Illegal Trade) to unveil the illegal laundering of wild species as “captive bred”. CITES is most interested in a crater coral species (Trachyphyllia geoffroyi). Unfortunately, there is little information on that species available.

We were wondering whether you may know any breeders or could provide us with some expert knowledge on their breeding biology? The result will be a 2-page summary report including the following information:

1. basic breeding biology in wild and captivity. We are specially interested if they are easily bred in captivity and how long it takes to reproduce them.
2. Captive husbandry (housing, diet, specialist care needed to ensure breeding, veterinary needs…)
3. Extent of breeding in captivity (number of specimens and breeders globally)
4. Marking systems that have been successfully used for individual identification of captive bred specimen

Any help would be highly appreciated and we will of course acknowledge your contribution in the report,

Best Regards,
