Dear Colleagues,

The most resilient coral reefs of Colombia are in officially
non-protected areas #ÁreaMarinaProtegidaArrecifesCapurganáCaboTiburón
70% healthy Coral Cover and #CoralesBahiaCartagena with 80% healthy
Coral Cover. These two case studies will be presented at an
international meeting that we are organizing to be held in Cartagena,
in November with the fishermen representatives of seven fishermen
communities as speakers. There is a fact that the Colombian Law 70
(1993) has allowed them participation in the decision making to
protect coral reefs.

We report within the #IYOR2018 that in Colombia until now the present
government has not dredge further #VaraderoColombia or started the gas
explotation close to
#ÁreaMarinaProtegidaArrecifesCapurganáCaboTiburón

In fact, both have been in consideration by Sylvia Earle @MissionBlue
to declare them as #HopeSpots. #SalvemosVaradero got the nomination
for Varadero already.

We have asked the presidential candidates to express they proposal
about coral reefs. One said “Corals are source of life…The best
argument to defend the Colombian territory surrounding San Andres
Islands, it is improving protection of coral reefs at Seaflower
Biosphere” (Gustavo Petro, May 2, 2018). The 27th of May are Colombian
elections. We are ready to address directly the new president whoever
will be, with the request to protect both coral reefs and improve
coral reef management effectiveness in the rest of the areas.
