[Coral-List] Job posting: JIMAR Supervisory Coral Reef Ecosystem Oceanographer position with NOAA's Ecosystem Sciences Division

The Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR) is
currently recruiting a Supervisory Coral Reef Ecosystem Oceanographer within
the PIFSC Ecosystem Sciences Division based in Honolulu, HI.  As a part of
the Ecosystem Sciences Division, the Supervisory Coral Reef Ecosystem
Oceanographer leads a team of researchers to assess and predict associated
ecological impacts to the coral reef ecosystems in the U.S. Pacific Islands
from multiple environmental drivers with a focus on local warming and
changes in the coastal carbonate system.



DUTIES: Designs and implements sampling methodologies and field experiments
to obtain robust physical, biogeochemical, and ecological time series
observations. Processes, analyzes, and summarizes interdisciplinary
oceanographic data from coral reef surveys, satellite remote sensing, and
other sources. Develops data products relevant to long-term monitoring to
document spatial patterns and temporal changes of conditions influencing
coral reef ecosystems. Prepares technical reports and scientific
manuscripts summarizing results of these analyses, and presents findings at
national and international meetings. Works closely with partners in local
jurisdictions and research institutions to build strong collaborative
relationships to investigate the physical, chemical, and biological
oceanographic conditions influencing coral reef ecosystem conditions,
particularly ocean warming and ocean acidification. Provides assistance
with management of the Ecosystem Sciences Division (ESD) including proposal
writing, administrative functions, and supervision of personnel.



PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  PhD from an accredited college
or university in Physical, Chemical, or Biogeochemical Oceanography,
Quantitative Ecology, Biology, Statistics, or a related field.



EXPERIENCE: Three to five (3-5) years of nearshore ecosystem oceanographic
work experience with data analysis, report writing, and marine survey
techniques. Experience in collecting and analyzing oceanographic and
ecological monitoring data, and seawater samples for physical, biological,
and chemical parameters. Experience conducting oceanographic and ecological
data analyses, time-series analyses, inter-disciplinary modeling
techniques, and other procedures commonly used by practitioners.
Demonstrated research and refereed publication record in the areas of
physical-biological interactions in coral reefs (or other nearshore
ecosystems), climate change and ocean acidification on the marine
environment, and related topics. Previous experience at sea for extended
periods (i.e., twenty (20) continuous days or more) of time aboard research
vessels. At least one (1) year of supervisory experience.
